LXA1 - Linux – Installation and Configuration

This course is designated for administrators who convert to LINUX operating system and need to install this system and administrate its basic functions. Participants will learn to install RedHat (Fedora) LINUX operating system and routine operations needful for administration of the system (installation and administration of discs, printers, graphic and net cards, administration of users and groups, work with files, administration of installed packages, basic configuration of RedHat LINUX etc.)

This course is designated for administrators who start to work with LINUX or convert to LINUX operating system. You will learn LINUX installation and routine operations needful for administration of the system.

Participants will learn to install RedHat LINUX operating system and routine operations needful for administration of the system (installation and administration of discs, printers, graphic and net cards, administration of users and groups, work with files, administration of installed packages, basic configuration of RedHat LINUX etc.)

Introduction

  • What is LINUX operating system, brief history of UNIX (BSD, System V)
  • Why just use LINUX. LINUX and other operating system on PC computer.
  • Properties, philosophy and possibilities of practice usage of LINUX.
  • Requirements for PC technical equipment for LINUX running.
  • Software equipment, gettable software for LINUX. Free software, GNU and GPL license
  • Information sources about LINUX in electronic and print form.
  • LINUX distributions (SlackWare, Debian, Corel, RedHat, SUSE etc.), their brief characterization, choice of suitable distribution

    Preparation before LINUX installation

  • Necessary information about PC hardware (motherboard, hard disc control unit, monitor, net card, modem, etc.), choice of suitable PC hardware for LINUX
  • Possibilities of RedHat LINUX installation – local installation, net installation
  • Coexistence of LINUX and other operating system on one PC
  • Structure and description of Redhat LINUX installation CD
  • Creation of boot diskettes which are needful for installation

    Installation of RedHat LINUX operating system

  • Installation start
  • Suitable separation and creation of hard disc partitions
  • Installation types, choice of software packages and their installation
  • Installation of mouse, graphic card, net card, printer and getting to run the TCP/IP net
  • Installation of LILO boot manager
