MSPW2W - Graphics in Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations 2003
Do you know how to work with MS PowerPoint 2003 but feel that it is not capable of creating high-quality presentations? Do you think it is important to know something about graphics, colour psychology or maybe font use if you want to create a high-quality presentation? Would you like to present your figures and charts in the most effective way? Would you like to consult the visual look of your presentation with other colleagues? Then this workshop is for you: you will hear valuable advice about the visual look of presentations and a critique on a presentation you bring in, and you can then experiment with a number of different tricks on your own slides.

- Managers who make their own presentations
- Assistants who prepare presentations for their boss
What we teach you
- To think about the purpose of a presentation, slide and graphic element
- How to create slides suited to the intended purpose
- Fundamental principles of graphics
- Principles of using colours, fonts, font size etc.
- How to express your ideas with a slide
Required skills
- MS PowerPoint skills corresponding to course MSPW1
- Basic user knowledge of the Windows environment
- Recommended – Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
Each participant
should bring his own presentation (at least 3 slides) to work with during the
workshop. (Presentations may be brought in on CD or flash disk.)

Course syllabus
Introduction
- Participants show their own presentations
- Presentations are mapped and the key tasks required in the presentations
are defined
Purpose of a visual aid
- Various purposes of a visual aid and how it influences the visual look of
a slide/presentation
- Finding the purpose in the specimen slides and modifying the slides
Fundamental principles of graphics
- Explanation of the fundamental principles of graphics (e.g. uniformity,
empty space, contrast, simplicity…)
- Modifying a specimen slide according to fundamental graphics principles
- Psychology of background and foreground colours in a presentation
- Font formatting
- Rules for slide backgrounds
Graphics tips for working with:
- numbers
- tables
- charts
- texts
- images
Applied section
- Joint and individual modification of slides based on the key tasks defined
in the opening section
- Joint and individual search for optimal solutions to participants’ slides
Closing presentation of modified slides with commentary
